New York State welcomed a new racecourse to its list in 1962 when Finger Lakes opened its doors for the first time on 23rd May 1962, the first race being won by Pure Village. The course is situated at Farmington, about 16 kilometres from Rochester, and built on a site of approximately 500 acres near Canadaigua Lake. The 8 furlong oval dirt track, with separate 6 furlong and 10 furlong chutes, share a 282 metre home straight. It has the capacity in its grandstand and clubhouse to seat up to 6,000 people. The course has three principal races namely the New York Derby, the New York Oaks and the New York Breeders Futurity.  The New York Derby is the middle leg of the Big Apple Triple, with the first leg the Mike Lee Stakes run at Belmont Park, while the final leg the Albany Stakes is run at Saratoga. In 1981 Fio Rito captured the hearts of Finger Lakes racegoers by winning the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga. It had previously managed to win 19 of its 27 races run at Finger Lakes and such was it held in high esteem that when it died in 1996 it was buried at the track. The New York Breeders Futurity, for 2 year olds over 6 furlongs, was first run at the track in 1963.
